ANNOUNCEMENTS

Swaps

February Fabric Swap - We are going to swap 6-1/2" squares of fabric suitable for making an "I Spy Quilt". An "I Spy Quilt" is made from fussy-cut fabrics, usually children's prints or other types of novelty fabrics with motifs that depict objects the child can "spy" when looking at the quilt. "I Spy Quilts" are typically made from squares, since they are easy to fussy cut, but you'll also find quilts made with other patchwork shapes.

Start with a 1 yard cut of fabric and cut into 6-1/2" squares. You can get 30 squares from a one yard cut. Place the (30) 6-1/2 squares of I-Spy fabric in a plastic zip bag and label the bag with your name. Bring as many bags of (30) 6-1/2" squares as you like to exchange - you get the like amount in return. Turn them in at the February meeting to the Swap table. We will swap all your fabrics with everyone else's and return 30 different fabrics back to you by the end of the meeting.

It is always a good idea to have an "I Spy" ready for a gift. Grandparents, parents and children love them.

Raffle Block - The March Raffle Block is an applique Shamrock. You can make up to 3 blocks to enter into the raffle. Turn your blocks in at the Swap table, and exchange them for raffle tickets. The winning ticket takes home all the blocks entered into the raffle. If there are more than 12-15 blocks, then a 2nd winner is drawn and the blocks split. Click here for March's Raffle Block pattern - Shamrock. Try it, chances are good that you might be a winner!

Block Swaps

  • Pizza Box Swap
  • 6" finished 9 Patch blocks - swapping (30) 9 patch blocks made with brights and white-on-white
  • Super Easy Alphabet Swap - using Pat Sloan's free applique alphabet.
  • Happy Scrappy Houses - using Bonnie Hunter's pattern

Check out the Swap table at the quilt guild meeting to sign up and for more information. If you have any questions, contact Vicky Price (see your roster for contact details.

Online Block-Of-the-Month (BOM) for 2012

There are several websites where you can find a Block of the Month project offered. Here are a few which started in January of this year. You'll need to visit the websites soon because January's blocks will be removed soon. The blocks are usually only up on the website for a month, so you have to return for the next block or subscribe to their newsletter.

Vintage Sampler -[ katlovesquilts.blogspot.com/p/2012-bom.html ] This website is the blog of Morning Glory Designs and offers 2 or 3 blocks on 1st & 15th of the month, for free. Awesome! (applique)

If you want to make the large quilt, Erin asks that you purchase the center block, Miss Mimi. At the end of the year there will be finishing directions for a quilt with the center block and a smaller one without the center block. The small patterns are 12" x 12" and the center block is 26" x 26". The blocks will be really fun floral sprays. The quilt will be shown in two color ways. (applique)

Calendar Holder - [ appleavenuequilts.blogspot.com/p/2012-block-of-month.html ] This is a Calendar Holder and will have 2 blocks offered each month to represent that month. Or you can use the blocks for a quilt. (pieced or paper-pieced)

January's block is "Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup" and the Recipe is for " Tomato Basil Soup". (pieced)

Workshops

Sea Glass by Karen Montgomery"Sea Glass" by Karen Montgomery

Date: Wed, Mar 28, 2012
Workshop: Sea Glass
Presenter: Karen Montgomery of The Quilt Company
Cost: $40 member ($50 non-member)
Time: 9am-3pm, 6 hours
Place: Mifflin Presbyterian Church, 123 Granville St, Gahanna, OH

"Sea Glass" uses a 40 strip jelly roll or Bali Pop to generate a 46" square quilt. The instructions are written specifically for use with the Creative Grid Quick Trim Ruler which makes it easier to trim fabric angles before sewing and eliminates pencil lines.

The "Sea Glass" pattern is provided to everyone enrolling in this class. If you are using a purchased jelly roll with at least 40 strips, there is no preparation needed before class. If using your own stash - cut 40 different 2-1/2" x 42" or (WOF) strips. Or you could cut 2 strips each of 20 different fabrics.

See our Workshops page for more information.

Fabric Swaps

February Fabric Swap - is fabric suitable for an I Spy quilt - animals, food, fairies, toys, etc. Bring (30) 6-1/2" squares in the plastic bag with your name on the outside. You squares will be traded with the rest, and you will leave with 30 different fabric squares.

At the meetings, check out the tables in the back. There is always something that is bound to spark your interest.
