Guidelines for Pinwheel Block Exchange

Blocks will be 6-1/2" square, and will finish to 6".

Materials Needed:

  • 1 yard - Cream background print
  • 1/2 yard - red print (choose darker reds)
  • 1/2 yard - blue print (choose dark royal to navy)
  • 8 sheets 3" finished Triangle Paper (for 128 units)

When selecting fabrics, please do not chose grayed or neon colors.

Construction:

Divide the yard of cream print into two half yard pieces. Place 1/2 yard cream right sides together with red fabric. Place four sheets of the Triangle Paper across the width on the red side and pin. Stitch and cut the half-squares as directed on the paper. Repeat with the blue fabric.

Do not remove paper yet. Press all seams toward the dark side. Then remove the paper. It is easier this way. Trim threads and points at this stage, please.

Construct each pinwheel block from 4 half-square units as below. BE SURE TO GET COLOR PLACEMENT CONSISTENT SO THAT EVERYONE'S PINWHEELS SPIN THE SAME DIRECTION!  Press after each step!

Pair up one red and one blue pinwheel 6 1/2" block, place in baggie with your name on it. You need fifteen pairs. You should have one extra pair to keep!

PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CONSTRUCTION. A BLOCK THAT IS POORLY DONE, TOO LITTLE, TOO BIG, STRINGY, OR UNTRIMMED, IS USELESS TO YOUR FRIENDS.

If anyone needs help achieving the neat 6 1/2" pinwheel block, feel free to call Kaaren Courtney at 268-1847.
